When his father retires early, young Fred is forced to leave the ice cream shops, elevated trains, and bustling streets of suburban Chicago and move to a small farm in southwest Wisconsin. It is the beginning of a new life filled with fun and adventure. There is a snake den under the back porch and the kitchen floor is covered with dead insects. There are snapping turtles to catch and farm animals to play with. But there is also work to be done. The old farmhouse has to be completely rebuilt. Dad’s vision of being a gentleman farmer involves having his two sons help with milking the cows, taking care of the chickens, fixing fences, and shoveling snow off the driveway in addition to attending school. And the Wisconsin summers are hot and humid, the winters long and bitterly cold. This is the story of how one family of four manages the transition from Chicago to rural Wisconsin in the late 1950s to 1960s. The story unfolds in a series of vignettes seen through Fred’s eyes, which describe how they renovate the old farmhouse, get an inactive dairy farm up and running, learn how to plant and harvest crops, overcome hardships, and adapt to the personalities and customs of a traditional farming community. The experiences will leave a permanent impression on Fred. Listening to the colorful characters in Richland Center and Yuba, exploring the farm on horseback, rounding up stray cows and sheep, cooling off at the swimming hole on the Pine River, catching fireflies, and stargazing on clear summer nights—these are memories that will last a lifetime. Dr. Fred G. Baker is a hydrologist, historian, and author living in Colorado. He is the author of The Life and Times of Con James Baker and The Light from a Thousand Campfires (with Hannah Pavlik).

Such a feel-good experience! I felt that it was Tom Sawyer meets Little House On the Prairie. So enjoyable were the shared experiences of a family moving from urban Chicago to the Wisconsin frontier. The family faced many uncertain challenges, but did so together, renovated a neglected farmhouse, and conquered each obstacle enthusiastically, thanks to strong parental encouragement. I loved reading about snakes on the porch, cave explorations, family newsletter circulation (for a whopping .08 per copy), and the family dog named Tippy, who, sadly was replaced two years later with Tippy II, along with lessons learned by the trials and errors of two youthful and adventurous boys. Additionally, the book offers a fascinating description of the Wisconsin landscape in the 1960s, from the hill country to the floodplains, together with some interesting Wisconsin cultural idiosyncrasies. While I did not neglect my family due to addictive suspense, I did look forward to my time spent with this moral and inviting family every day. I look forward to reading it a second time very soon!

Growing Up Wisconsin Remembrances from the American Midwest Fred G Baker PhD 9780615906027 Books Reviews

Fred Baker says in his preface that he was moved to write his memoir out of a desire to record "some of the positive experiences" of his own early years and "to document a rural lifestyle that has all but disappeared . . . ." Two wonderful reasons for writing about his life on a small farm where he worked hard, played hard and lived free of the urban world that continues to gobble up the open spaces of our world. What pleases me is the image of two brothers who are both bound to the land and free to explore it. I see them on their horses, sans phones, sans watches, sans the weight of constant contact with a hard world of technology and pavement. The freedom of children growing up within the loose boundaries of small town and small farm will likely not return to us. We are too numerous and busy to go "out" when the chores are done and come in at dark. Beyond that, Baker is the only other person I know who remembers Wolf River apples.
This was an interesting book on how two boys grew up. The ways of life in the 1800's. There was no fowl language. I enjoy books that I can read with no bad words.
