The Art of Public Speaking Lessons from the Greatest Speeches in History John R Hale 9781598037012 Books
Another of these great "Great Courses" courses. I've read dozens of books on public speaking, and have practiced it for some 50 years. Even so, Dr. Hale--a tremendously knowledgeable communicator and teacher--has made me feel like a beginner. And I love it. He leads the student through through a series of examples of excellent famous speakers, and gives us their personal history, especially as it applies to speaking--how they expressed themselves, overcame personal problems with public speaking, and learned to craft their words and tones to create the impact they wished to create, Dr. Hale's great store of knowledge and his wisdom in weaving powerful lessons is beyond excellent. I am immensely enriched.Even if you don't want to be a public speaker, you'll likely be mesmerized by his "living" histories of these famous people who used their speaking skills to change the world. I highly recommend this CD series (or any form these lessons take) to everyone, but most especially those who strive to convey their thinking and ideas to others through speech. (Ariel I.)

The Art of Public Speaking Lessons from the Greatest Speeches in History John R Hale 9781598037012 Books Reviews
I cannot get this book to play. I really would like to listen and learn from this book.
The Art of Public Speaking is one of numerous courses from The Great Courses series. This course provides tips and strategies for public speaking to a large or a small group. Professor John Hale emphasizes that the human mind was created to hear stories; thus, he tells a story about each speaker as we learn about the various ways to improve our public speaking skills. Here is a list of takeaways for me from this highly useful course pace yourself as you speak, maintain eye contact with your audience, share a vision, use familiar quotations in your speech, be mindful of your audience, be courteous and respectful, build a logical case, use vivid language, check the accuracy of your facts, use humor carefully, use stories and narratives, establish a personal connection with your listeners, work on memorization, and, finally, practice your delivery. Of course, there are other useful techniques as well. If you are a seasoned public speaker or are new to public speaking this is a highly useful course that will assist you in many ways. Finally, to paraphrase Winston Churchill the ability to be a good public speaker can make a king out of a commoner.
These lessons are filled with useful tips based on some of the greatest speakers in history. The presenter is likable and he has excellent speaking and teaching skills. I had borrowed the set from a friend but liked them so well that I wanted my own.
