This sharp, funny collection of stories begins in the 1950s in an insular northern village "scoured by bitter winds and rough gossip tongues". The title story sees our narrator ironing out her northern vowels with the help of an ex-actress with one lung and a Manchester accent. In "Third Floor Rising" she watches, dazzled, as her mother carves out a stylish new identity. With a deceptively light touch, Mantel locates the transforming moments of a haunted childhood.

I am a big fan of Hilary Mantel. I have read everything she wrote that I could get my hands on. But this little book is my favorite. I can read it over and over and still marvel at the way she puts words together. How the heck does she do that? I really prefer this book over all the others, though I love most of them as well.

Learning to Talk (Audible Audio Edition) Hilary Mantel Patrick Moy Anna Bentinck Jane Collingwood Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews

Powerful prose - I am dumbfounded by how Mantel can make my blood run cold with dread, simply by telling a story about a couple of girls playing one afternoon. Mantel crafts her stories by making the reader very comfortable, just enjoying the nice sentences, oooh why isn't all literature like this, getting lulled into it, and then - WHAM! Gets you!
Learning to Talk is dark, autoethnographic. It has some of the humour that you find in eg. Wolf Hall, but used more for irony. I'm glad I read this on ; saved me reaching for the dictionary.

And, to Hilary Mantel I thank you for writing, for producing these magnificent works. I put your name between Brecht and Shakespeare.
A short book of autobiographical stories. I know the area in Britain about which she writes, so I was particularly intrigued. I found it excellent, though this particular book might not interest everyone. If you think you can write, read some of Hilary Mantel's writing, and you'll probably agree that you simply can't begin to write with such wit and elegance. She is so observant and has such control of words and language that her books are always very difficult to put down. Always a good price and good service from .
Ok, I admit it, I'm a Hilary Mantel fan. This is wonderful book, full of wisdom and humor, in an interesting writing style. Conversational. Sensational prose! And a fascinating look at a marvelous writer's ability to triumph over adversity. She's self-analyzing without self-pity. Truly transforms her suffering into a painful but ultimately lovely memoir. Gutsy lady! Great writer! Marvelous introspective ability - from childhood on.
