The Saxon Boy (Audible Audio Edition) Lisa J Lickel Stephanie Quinn Fox Ridge Publications Books
After young John Klessig's father dies, his mother remarries, and the boy struggles to accept his new stepfather. Though set in the 1800's, children of today will relate well with the main character's challenges. As an adult I found the story captivating. I look forward to reading other books in the series.Product details

The Saxon Boy (Audible Audio Edition) Lisa J Lickel Stephanie Quinn Fox Ridge Publications Books Reviews
An intelligently constructed story that kept you clued to the paged from the start. The author has woven family life, community experiences, sadness and joy into what make a great read for adults and children.
I found the book educative and interesting. The glossary at the back of the book is a great touch. Very artistic too; a big well done to the illustrator.
All together a good read for the young and old.
Well worth the money.
A delightful story that captures the heart of what life was like for children on the frontier in the mid 1800's. Despite the harshness of the times, love and helping one another are strong themes in the book. "The Saxon Boy" is also rich in culture and ethnicity, encouraging acceptance of people different from you. The book could also be used as a springboard to talk about what it means to be a family. A great chapter book for early readers, or for a parent to read to his child. This award-winning book deserves lots of praise.
The First Children of Farmington (Wisconsin/USA) John Klessig the Saxon Boy.
Written by able and avid storyteller Lisa J. Lickel and illustrated by Brenda K. Hendricks, this award winning book is to be commended.
John Klessig—the Saxon Boy—comes from a large Wisconsin family. His father dies and his mother marries the quiet but hard working Ernst Jaehnig.
This is an interesting story of a young boy’s journey coping with changes after his father’s death, and adapting to family life after the arrival of his stepfather. Time and experiences lead him to recognise his Ernst as friend, not foe.
An educational read to add to the others in this series of ‘The First Children of Farmington’.
I’m really glad that I read The Saxon Boy, by Lisa Lickel. Lisa has a way of writing that captivates the reader from the first sentence, and keeps your attention through to the end of the book. I love how she blends history with a touch of real-life situations to make the story not only interesting, but compelling as well. You feel the tenderness and the strive to move forward in the characters with every turn of the page. A story of loss, learning, and building relationships in one so young will keep the attention of any young person. Written with a touch of history blended in, not only will children learn, but they can also enjoy the story. Read The Saxon Boy with your child. Adults can benefit from this story, too!
"John Klessig The Saxon Boy" is the first of Lisa Lickel's children's books I've read. I was captivated by the story from the opening sentence of Chapter One. Interwoven throughout this wonderful tale of love and respect is the story of eight-year-old John Klessig, a first generation American born of immigrant parents. Ms. Lickel's story captures the historical background of this era while teaching children a valuable lesson. I highly recommend this book that was recognized by the Wisconsin Writers Association with a "Jade Ring" for best fiction for Young Adults in their fall competition.

This was a short feel good story about a village in Wisconsin post Civil War. He learns to accept his stepfather.
This award-winning story really brought the 1800’s to life. I appreciated how John’s struggle to understand his stepfather was clearly portrayed. I felt like cheering when John and his stepfather finally began to bond. I thought that this was a very enjoyable children’s book.
